What Is Winget: Installing and Removing Apps Like a Pro

What winget actually is

The Windows Package Manager is Microsoft's official command-line tool for installing, updating and removing applications. It ships inside the App Installer package from the Microsoft Store, present by default on current Windows 10 and all Windows 11 installs — open Windows Terminal and run winget --info to see whether yours is alive. Under the hood it is manifest-driven: community-maintained manifests describe where the vendor's official installer lives, its silent-install switches and its hash; winget downloads that installer straight from the source, verifies it and runs it with the right flags. You are not getting repackaged software — you are getting the same installer, minus the clicking and minus the download-portal bundleware.

The commands that cover 95% of real use

The verb set is small and learnable in an afternoon. Run these in any terminal — no admin prompt needed for per-user installs — and the download-page era of your life is over. Everything else in winget --help is optional garnish.

• winget search vscode — find an app by name or ID across the winget and msstore sources
• winget install Git.Git — install by exact ID, silently, with the right switches
• winget upgrade — list everything installed that has an update available
• winget upgrade --all — update every app in one command; the closest Windows gets to brew upgrade
• winget uninstall "Google Chrome" — clean removal through the app's own uninstaller
• winget export -o apps.json — snapshot your app list; winget import rebuilds it on a new machine

The honest limits

winget is not magic and does not cover everything. Apps with their own updaters sometimes register oddly in winget list; a few vendors pull their manifests; and the msstore source occasionally returns noise — winget source remove msstore silences it if you want only classic desktop apps. It also will not undo bundleware hidden inside an app whose own installer carries it, though manifests for such apps usually pass the switches that decline the offers. And for removal, it invokes the same uninstallers as Settings — leftover %AppData% folders remain a fact of Windows life the command does not solve.

None of that changes the main point: for mainstream software — browsers, editors, runtimes, utilities — winget is now the fastest and safest install path on Windows. It belongs in the muscle memory of anyone who sets up more than one PC a year. The thirty minutes of learning pay themselves back the first time you rebuild a machine.
