What WinSxS actually stores

WinSxS is the Windows component store: a warehouse of every version of every system component your machine has ever installed. When an update arrives, the new files land here and the old versions stay, because uninstalling an update means pointing the system back at them. When SFC repairs a corrupted system file, the known-good copy comes out of this same store. No second copy of that archive exists — WinSxS is the single source of truth for system files.

The folder's size is also a lie, though not an intentional one. Files in System32 are hard-linked to their copies in WinSxS — one physical file, counted in both places whenever Explorer adds up folder sizes. The number you see is apparent size, not additional disk usage. Ten gigabytes of WinSxS does not mean ten gigabytes you could reclaim; the recoverable slice is a fraction of that figure.

Why it grows, and the only safe ways to shrink it

The store grows with every cumulative update because Windows keeps superseded component versions around for a while — that mechanism is what makes update uninstall possible. Microsoft built the cleanup into the system itself, and it is safe precisely because it understands the hard-link structure. Everything else — manual deletion, third-party cleaners that touch WinSxS — is gambling with the component store as the stake.
