Find startup programs in Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11
Windows 10 and 11: open Settings → Apps → Startup, or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and choose Startup apps in Task Manager. Windows 8: open Task Manager and select Startup. Windows 7: press Win+R, enter msconfig, then open the Startup tab. Names and placement can vary slightly by edition and update.
These screens are useful starting points, not a complete inventory of every program that can run automatically. Per-user and system-wide Startup folders, logon-triggered scheduled tasks, and services are separate mechanisms; investigate them only when the standard list does not explain the behavior.
Use startup impact as a clue, not a promise
On supported Windows versions, Task Manager may label an app's startup impact. Treat that as Windows' estimate of resource use during startup—not a guarantee that disabling it will save a specific number of seconds. Actual boot time also depends on updates, storage, drivers, sign-in work and the PC itself.
Start with apps you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Change one or two at a time, restart, and compare the result under similar conditions. This makes it easier to reverse a change if an app or device stops behaving as expected.
What is usually safe to turn off
- Game launchers, music players and chat apps you are comfortable opening manually
- Optional app pre-launchers whose purpose and publisher you can verify
- Cloud-sync clients only if you understand that files will stop syncing until you open or re-enable the app
- Use the app's own “start with Windows” setting when available; it is often the clearest way to manage that app
What not to disable blindly
There is no universal safe/unsafe list: the same vendor utility can be optional on one PC and necessary on another. If you cannot verify what an entry does, leave it enabled and check the PC maker's or software publisher's documentation first.
- Security software, device drivers, accessibility tools and utilities required for hardware features you use
- An entry with an unfamiliar name or publisher—verify its full file path and publisher before changing it
- Windows services or scheduled tasks just because they appear automatic; changing them can affect updates, sign-in or connected hardware
A safe troubleshooting sequence
First disable an app through its own settings or the Windows startup screen for your version. Restart and check whether the symptom improves. If a program still launches, inspect its Startup-folder shortcut or a logon-triggered task; avoid editing the registry or changing services unless you have a restore point and know the exact entry.
Kleaner PRO's current Startup screen is a supplementary view of entries in the HKCU and HKLM Run registry keys, with an optional separate signature scan. It is not a complete inventory of Startup folders, scheduled tasks and services, and it should not be treated as measuring boot-time savings. Use Windows' version-specific controls for changes.
Questions and Answers
Where are startup apps in Windows 11?
Open Settings → Apps → Startup, or open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps. The screen shows registered startup apps; scheduled tasks, services and Startup-folder shortcuts are separate mechanisms.
How do I find startup programs in Windows 7?
Press Win+R, enter msconfig, and open the Startup tab. If a program still launches, check its own setting and the Startup folders; avoid changing unfamiliar services or registry entries without a backup.
Will disabling startup apps make Windows boot faster?
It can reduce work during sign-in when an app is contributing to the delay, but the result varies by PC and app. Disable only entries you recognize, restart, and compare under similar conditions; there is no universal number of apps that is “too many.”
