How to Wipe Your Drive Before Selling a Windows PC

Why a quick format is not wiping

A quick format writes a new, empty file table and leaves every data sector untouched, which is exactly why it finishes in seconds. Recovery tools such as Recuva or PhotoRec do not read the file table — they scan the raw sectors and reassemble what they find, so a quick-formatted drive is a quarry, not a blank page. The same logic applies to deleted files and even to a deleted user account without a wipe: the content is marked free, not destroyed.

Encryption changes the math entirely: on a drive protected by BitLocker or device encryption, everything on disk is ciphertext, and the key lives in the hardware or in your Microsoft account. Destroy the key and the ciphertext is noise — which is why a reset on an encrypted PC is already close to a proper wipe. Check whether your drive is encrypted in Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption (or the BitLocker settings on Pro) before you plan anything.

Wiping the PC you are selling: Reset with data erasure

The built-in tool is Reset this PC: Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything, then click Change settings and switch on the Clean the drive (data erasure) toggle before confirming. That toggle is the difference between unlinking files and overwriting them — with it on, the reset takes an hour or more instead of minutes, and that hour is what makes your tax returns unrecoverable. Choose Cloud download if you can spare about 4 GB of traffic: it reinstalls a fresh Windows image instead of reusing the local one.

The reset ends at the out-of-box setup screen, which is exactly what a buyer wants to see — stop there and let them pick their own region and account. Before you start, work through a short checklist; it takes ten minutes and prevents the classic regrets.

• Copy everything worth keeping to an external drive and check that the copy opens
• Deactivate licensed software that allows a limited number of activations (Adobe, older games)
• Sign out of Microsoft accounts, browser sync and accounts inside apps
• Unlink hardware-bound services where the seller portal allows it
• Leave the Windows license alone: it is a digital license tied to the hardware and transfers with the machine

Wiping separate drives: HDD and SSD go different ways

For a spare hard drive, overwrite every sector: open an elevated Command Prompt, run diskpart, then list disk, select disk N (double-check the number — clean all is unrecoverable) and finally clean all, which zeroes the entire disk and takes hours on multi-terabyte drives. The format route is format D: /P:2, which zeroes every sector and then writes random data over it in additional passes; both methods leave a hard drive genuinely blank.

An SSD must not be wiped that way: wear leveling means the controller overwrites spare cells while old copies sit in others, so multiple passes guarantee nothing and just consume write cycles. Use the manufacturer's secure erase instead — Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive and WD Dashboard all ship one — or rely on encryption: if the SSD was BitLocker-protected, resetting or quick-formatting it destroys the key and the data with it. After diskpart clean on the system drive, the PC will not boot until you reinstall Windows from a USB stick made with the Media Creation Tool.
