Visibility first: extensions, hidden files, full paths

Hidden file extensions are not a design choice, they are a security hole: "invoice.pdf.exe" displays as "invoice.pdf", and that trick still works on people because the default is still wrong. In Windows 11 the fix is one toggle — View → Show → File name extensions. In the same menu, Hidden items reveals the folders you sometimes genuinely need to see, and "Display the full path" puts the complete route in the title bar instead of a folder name shared by eight other folders.

None of these changes delete anything or make Windows less stable — they just stop Explorer from lying to you by omission. If you set up machines for other people, this trio is the first five minutes of any installation. Turn them on once and they stay on; Windows does not reset them after updates, which is more than can be said for some browser settings.

Folder Options (the three-dot menu → Options) → General → "Open File Explorer to" switches the start page from Home to This PC, which matters if your work lives on drives rather than in a feed of recent files. And the worst default of all sits under View → Show: "Show sync provider notifications", which lets OneDrive put promotional tips into your file listing — turn it off and the file list contains files again.

The right-click menu: resist it properly

Windows 11's condensed right-click menu hides Copy as path and most other useful commands behind "Show more options" — Shift+F10 or that button reveals the classic menu any time you want it. If you want it permanently, the registry route is one key: under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32, set the default value to an empty string and restart Explorer. That is the seventh setting, and the only one that deserves care: exact key, exact value, nothing else touched — deleting the key later undoes everything cleanly.
