Not Enough Space for a Windows Update? Free Storage Without Deleting System Folders

The free space required for a Windows update varies with the device, update, and recovery files already present, so a universal gigabyte target is unreliable. Start with Windows Storage settings and review each suggested category before deleting anything.

Find what is using the system drive

Open Settings → System → Storage and let Windows calculate the categories. Cleanup recommendations can show temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced items, and unused apps; the amount shown is an estimate until you choose items.

  • Review Temporary files and leave Downloads unchecked unless you have inspected that folder.
  • Use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations and read each category label before confirming.
  • Move personal videos or archives to another drive only after verifying the copy opens.
  • If Setup offers external storage for a feature update, follow the on-screen instructions.

Do not remove rollback or servicing files blindly

Deleting Previous Windows installation(s) can remove the option to roll back after an upgrade; Microsoft notes that this cannot be undone after the files are removed. Do not manually delete WinSxS, Windows Installer, or other protected system folders—use Windows' own cleanup controls and keep a separate backup of personal files.

Questions and Answers

How many gigabytes does a Windows update need?

There is no reliable single number for every PC and update. Use the space estimate Windows shows for that update and the Storage settings on your device.

Can I delete Windows.old to make the update fit?

Only if you accept losing the built-in rollback option to the previous Windows installation. Review Microsoft's warning before removing it.
