Why DDU beats an over-the-top update
The NVIDIA installer layers the new driver over the old one, so leftover files, profiles and registry entries from earlier builds can keep causing trouble. Windows Update adds its own chaos, because it can silently deliver a different WHQL build and undo your work. DDU removes the display driver, PhysX and the GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App leftovers in one pass, so the new package lands on a clean base.
Reach for a clean install when games stutter after an update, when the driver crashes to desktop, when the screen stays black after waking, or after switching from an AMD or Intel card. For a routine update you do not need any of this — the plain installer is enough.
- Download the driver first from nvidia.com/drivers — Game Ready for gaming, Studio for photo and video work.
- Get Display Driver Uninstaller from wagnardsoft.com, its only official source; the download is a couple of megabytes.
- Create a restore point: press Win, type Create a restore point, open the System Protection tab and click Create.
- Close every app that touches the GPU: browsers, game launchers, RGB and overclocking tools.
- Disconnect the internet, or Windows Update may push its own driver while you work.
Step by step: DDU in Safe Mode, then the NVIDIA installer
Extract DDU, run its DDU.exe and let it reboot into Safe Mode when it offers to. In Safe Mode, keep the recommended options, pick GPU on the right, select NVIDIA and press Clean and restart — the screen flickers while DDU strips files, services and caches, and the PC restarts on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Low resolution and washed-out colors are normal at this point, and so is a second restart; do not reconnect the network yet.
Run the NVIDIA installer you downloaded earlier and choose Custom (Advanced): there you can untick components you do not need and see the full list of what gets installed. When it finishes, reboot once more, reconnect the internet and give Windows Update a run, so it sees your newer driver instead of pulling an older one.
After the install: verify the version and keep it
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click your GeForce card and check the Driver tab: the version must match the package you installed, and nvidia-smi in a terminal prints the same number in one line. If the version is older than expected, Windows Update won the race — run the NVIDIA package once more with the network off.
Repeat the full DDU pass only when problems return after a big Windows update; between those, the normal installer on top is fine. Kleaner PRO users can let it sweep the temp folders and old installer leftovers after such a session instead of hunting them down by hand.

Do I need DDU to update NVIDIA drivers?
For a routine update, no — the NVIDIA installer handles that. DDU belongs to corrupted installs, brand switches and problems that survive a normal update.
Why does Windows Update keep replacing my NVIDIA driver?
Windows Update delivers the WHQL builds it considers applicable, and they can be older than NVIDIA's own. Stay offline during the clean install, and run Windows Update only afterwards.
Should I install Game Ready or Studio drivers?
Both carry the same core driver; Game Ready gets day-one game optimizations, while Studio is validated for creative apps and tends to be the stabler pick. Choose Studio unless you play the newest titles at launch.
