Why a clean install beats an over-the-top update
The standard Intel installer layers the new driver over whatever is already there, and leftovers from previous versions — Intel, NVIDIA or AMD — can keep interfering. Windows Update complicates things further, because it can silently replace your fresh driver with an older WHQL build. A clean install removes the display driver completely, so the new package lands on a clean base.
Typical symptoms that call for it: micro-stutter in games after an update, crashes to desktop, black screens on wake, or an Arc card that keeps losing its resolution settings. In most of these cases one thorough pass fixes what a dozen updates could not. It is also the recommended move when you switch brands — for example from an NVIDIA card to an Arc A750 or A770 — and after a big Windows feature update.
- Download the newest Intel Arc driver package from intel.com first — the PC will be offline mid-process.
- Get Display Driver Uninstaller from wagnardsoft.com, the only official source.
- Create a restore point: press Win and type Create a restore point → Create.
- Disconnect the internet (unplug Ethernet, disable Wi-Fi) so Windows Update cannot race you.
- Close everything: browsers, game launchers, RGB and overclocking utilities.
Step by step: DDU in Safe Mode, then the Intel package
Extract DDU, run its DDU.exe and let it boot the PC into Safe Mode when it offers to. Inside Safe Mode, open DDU, keep the recommended default options, choose GPU on the right, select Intel, then press Clean and restart. The screen flickers, DDU strips the driver files, registry entries and caches, and the machine restarts on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter — low resolution and washed-out colors are normal at this stage.
With the network still disconnected, run the Intel installer you downloaded earlier, accept the license and let it finish; that is five to ten minutes ending in a reboot request. Reboot and give the system a minute to settle. Only after that, reconnect the internet and run Windows Update, so it sees the newer driver you just installed instead of pulling an older one.
After the install: verify the version and enable Resizable BAR
Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click your Arc card and check the Driver tab: the version and date should match the package you installed. The same build number shows in Intel's Graphics Software app, on the system page or in the overlay. If the version does not match, run the Intel package once more before suspecting anything else.
If you game on a discrete Arc card, make sure Resizable BAR is enabled in the UEFI — the settings are usually called Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding, and Arc cards lose a noticeable amount of performance without them. Recheck the driver version after each big Windows update, and repeat the clean install only when problems return; a plain update on top is enough in between. Do I need DDU to update Intel Arc drivers?
For a routine update, no — the Intel installer over the old driver works. DDU belongs to corrupted installs, brand switches and problems that survive a normal update.
