What Storage Sense cleans — and what it never touches
Storage Sense is a scheduled maintenance task, not a live process. It wakes up at the interval you pick, removes the junk categories below and goes back to sleep. It works on any drive, but the schedule and settings live on the system drive's page.
The design is deliberately conservative, which is why it is safe to enable on any PC. Still, two of its options can delete personal data if you switch them on knowingly — the Downloads folder rule and the Recycle Bin timer. Configure them deliberately rather than blindly accepting defaults.

Configuring Storage Sense step by step
Open Settings > System > Storage and switch on the Storage Sense toggle. Click anywhere on the Storage Sense row to expand its settings. The first dropdown, “Run Storage Sense”, sets the rhythm: every day, every week, every month, or only when free space runs low — “Every week” is a sensible default for most PCs. Below it, set the Recycle Bin rule (“Delete files in my Recycle Bin if they have been there for over”) to 30 days, and keep the Downloads rule at “Never” unless you genuinely use Downloads as a temporary holding pen.
The OneDrive section appears if you sign in with a Microsoft account. It can turn locally available OneDrive files back into online-only placeholders after a period of not being opened — the files stay safe in the cloud, but they will need re-downloading before use. Finish with “Run Storage Sense now” at the bottom: the first pass shows a clean before-and-after on the Storage page and confirms everything works.
What Storage Sense doesn't cover
For all its convenience, Storage Sense is a light cleaner. It does not clear browser caches, leftover files of uninstalled apps, update caches in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, or the deep component store — for those, the Temporary files view on the same Settings page or a dedicated cleaner is needed. Think of it as the robot vacuum of Windows: it keeps the floor presentable, but it doesn't do the spring cleaning.
A practical split for most people. Leave Storage Sense on weekly for the routine, and run a deeper pass once a quarter.
