What Windows.old is and why you shouldn't delete it manually
When Windows performs a feature update — for example the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11 or a twice-yearly version upgrade — it doesn't overwrite your old system in place. Instead it moves the entire previous installation into a folder called Windows.old at the root of C:. That folder is your safety net: as long as it exists, Settings > System > Recovery offers a “Go back” option that restores the previous version in about half an hour.
The folder is owned by TrustedInstaller, not by your account, which is why File Explorer throws up permission errors when you try to delete it the normal way. Forcing it with ownership changes sometimes works but routinely leaves thousands of orphaned files behind. Use the built-in cleanup tools instead — they remove the folder completely and correctly, and they are just as fast.

Deleting Windows.old through Settings
Open Settings and go to System > Storage > Temporary files. Windows scans for a moment, then shows a list of removable categories with their sizes. Check “Previous Windows installation files” — on this screen it usually weighs 15 GB or more — and take a second to review what else is checked: “Downloads” and “Recycle Bin” include personal files, so uncheck them unless you really mean it. Click “Remove files” and wait; deleting a folder of this size takes a few minutes.
If the entry is missing from the list, the folder has already been cleaned or the ten-day rollback window has closed. The classic alternative works too: press Win+R, run cleanmgr, pick drive C:, click “Clean up system files”, and check “Previous Windows installation(s)” in the second scan. Both routes do exactly the same thing — Settings just wraps it in a friendlier interface.
What to do before deleting — and what happens after
Once Windows.old is gone, the “Go back” option in Settings > System > Recovery disappears for good: rolling back then means a clean reinstall from installation media, with your files restored from a backup. So before deleting, open Windows.old\Users\YourName\ and copy out anything you miss — files from the old Desktop, Documents or browser profiles that lived in AppData. Nothing in your current user profile is affected by the deletion.
The folder also disappears on its own schedule. Ten days after the update, Windows removes it automatically during maintenance, and Storage Sense can take it away sooner. If your system is running fine after the update and you have checked the old profiles for anything worth saving, there is no reason to keep 20 GB of rollback insurance on a drive that needs the space.
