How to Uninstall the Copilot App From Windows 11

What the Copilot app is — and what removal actually changes

The Copilot app that ships with Windows 11 23H2 and later is a small web-based wrapper (package name Microsoft.Copilot) that opens Microsoft's AI chat in its own window. Microsoft also delivered it to Windows 10 22H2 machines during 2024, so the same removal steps apply there. The app itself is lightweight — well under 200 MB with its data — so do not expect gigabytes back; the real win is a cleaner taskbar, Start menu and app list.

Uninstalling the app does not touch anything else on the system. Windows search, the Start menu, the Snipping Tool and your files are completely unaffected, and your chat history stays in your Microsoft account in the cloud until you delete it there yourself.

How to uninstall Copilot the safe way

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Copilot in the list, click the three dots next to its name and choose Uninstall, then confirm. On current builds the app disappears within seconds, together with its taskbar button. Alternatively, right-click Copilot in the Start menu and pick Uninstall from the context menu — same result, fewer clicks.

If the button is missing, remove the package with PowerShell: open Terminal (admin rights are not required, the app is per-user) and run Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Copilot | Remove-AppxPackage. To strip the app from every user account on the PC, run the same command with -AllUsers from an elevated PowerShell. On company-managed machines the app may be pushed back by policy — in that case a local removal will not stick, and the IT admin is the right person to ask.

After removal: what to check, and keeping the system tidy

Reboot once so the taskbar and Start menu refresh cleanly, and confirm the Copilot entry is gone from the installed apps list. If you use Edge, note that the browser's own Copilot icon in the sidebar is unaffected by the uninstall and can be turned off separately in Edge settings. If you ever want the assistant back, search for Copilot in the Microsoft Store and install it in one click.

One thing worth knowing: uninstalled Store apps often leave their settings and cache behind in the %LOCALAPPDATA% and %APPDATA% folders — small files, but they add up after a few dozen removals.
