How to Uninstall OneDrive Completely From Windows 11

What removing OneDrive touches — and what it leaves alone

OneDrive ships with Windows 11 as a per-user desktop app, which is why it can be uninstalled like any normal program without harming the system. Windows Update, the Store and classic desktop apps have no dependency on it; the only things that stop working are cloud sync and Files On-Demand. The removal does not affect the Windows license, your account or other Microsoft services.

The sync folder at %USERPROFILE%\OneDrive also survives the uninstall, keeping every file that was downloaded to this PC. Cloud-only placeholder files from Files On-Demand are the exception: once the app is gone, double-clicking them does nothing until you reinstall OneDrive or fetch the files through the web interface. Leftover caches under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\OneDrive and %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft OneDrive can hold hundreds of megabytes.

Uninstalling OneDrive step by step

Press Win+I, go to Apps → Installed apps, find Microsoft OneDrive, click the three dots next to it and choose Uninstall, then confirm. The same page opens from the right-click menu of the Start button, and winget users can run winget uninstall Microsoft.OneDrive in an elevated terminal instead. The app disappears for the current user; on a shared PC, repeat this in every account where OneDrive is set up.

Before uninstalling, give the queue a final look: click the cloud icon and make sure it reports everything as up to date, otherwise let the sync finish. In the OneDrive settings under Account, Unlink this PC detaches the machine from your Microsoft account first — handy if you plan to reinstall later. The classic command-line route still works too: %SystemRoot%\System32\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall, optionally followed by the SysWOW64 variant, which merely throws a harmless error if that build is absent.

Keeping OneDrive out and sweeping the leftovers

Office installations and some Store updates can bring OneDrive back, so glance at Installed apps again after bigger software sessions. To block sync at the policy level, Windows Pro offers Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → OneDrive → Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage in the Local Group Policy Editor; on Home, the registry does the same job: under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive set the DWORD DisableFileSyncNGSC to 1. Note that the policy also removes OneDrive locations from Office save dialogs.

Once the app is gone, delete the leftover cache folders by hand or let a dedicated cleaner do the sweep: Kleaner PRO, for example, clears OneDrive remnants together with other update leftovers in a single pass. The sync folder %USERPROFILE%\OneDrive you should keep — it is your only local copy of anything that was not stored somewhere else.
