Telegram Desktop Cache: Where Media Piles Up Silently

Two folders with two different rules

Telegram Desktop keeps media in two places, and confusing them is the sure way to either lose chats or carry useless gigabytes for years. The cache is the polite half: it lives inside the profile folder %APPDATA%\Telegram Desktop, holds copies of the photos and videos the app has shown you, and is managed entirely from Settings → Data and Storage → Storage usage — a real size readout, a Clear cache button and the "Keep media" retention rule (3 days, 1 week, 1 month or forever) that can empty it on its own.

Downloads are the wild half: every file you download — and plenty you never asked for, if automatic download is on — lands in Downloads\Telegram Desktop and stays there for good. Clear cache does not touch that folder, no retention rule measures it, and it grows exactly as long as your groups keep posting files. The tdata folder inside the profile is the third rail: it holds your sessions and secret chats, and deleting it by hand logs you out and wipes local data that never comes back.

The settings that actually shrink it

Start with Keep media set to 1 month: for most people that alone halves the cache within weeks, without touching a single chat. Then walk the Automatic media download section — on default settings, groups and channels happily download photos and even videos, which is the pipeline filling both folders; limiting it to private chats or turning it off changes the growth rate completely. Finally, the one-time job: check the real size of Downloads\Telegram Desktop in File Explorer, sort by size, and move out or delete what you actually kept. Media worth keeping belongs in a proper folder the day it arrives — Telegram is a conveyor, not an archive.

Keeping it flat over a year

The maintenance loop is one minute per season: open Storage usage, glance at the number, clear it if it offends you — and glance at the downloads folder too. The gauge in Telegram is honest: the number on screen is the number on disk, which makes it a rare app you can trust to report on itself. What you cannot do is automate the downloads folder from inside the app: no setting manages it, so the honest answer is a manual quarterly pass, or your cleanup tool's folder view. And before wiping anything labeled "Telegram" in %APPDATA%: the profile folder holds more than cache — your account lives there.
